Hello. Hope it is not too late to wish my readers Happy CNY 2017! Hope all are well and safe you guys!

This week’s sharing, have been very interesting and new to me. Now, where do I begin?

Yesterday, I’ve been given a choice to go or not to go live on air, to promote Pustaka’s activities. As I’ve always been insecure and always, like always doubt myself and my capabilities, I rejected the offer politely. And I must say, it’s kinda lame to have rejected a once in a lifetime experience! I understand, not all interns in Pustaka have got the chance to do this. Today, as I sat on my desk, my supervisor handed me the scripts and said, “Pick either one or two of the activities, just in case I want you to go live on air”. I panicked. But also happy to try new things and step out of my comfort zone. As a PR, I know I cannot run away or dodge my responsibilities. And this is part of the deal, as a PR.

The visit to RTM Miri was very enjoyable and so many to learn in such a short time being in there. Upon arrival, we were greeted by one of the DJ, DJ Reza. She showed us to the recording room and introduce me to DJ Leo. They were really nice and supportive. They told me they were very nervous too when they first time went on air. DJ Leo and DJ Reza told me to be calm and go with the flow. Also, they spotted my shyness and said, “Sooner or later, you will have to face this. Be it in front of public or behind the mic, you have to adapt fast. Put aside the shy feeling and act as if the world is your stage”. And I am forever grateful for that piece of advice.

2nd February 2017 – Visit to RTM Miri to promote Pustaka Negeri Sarawak’s ongoing and upcoming events. From left to right, DJ Leo, DJ Reza and I.

During the session, I made a few mistakes. My voice is shaking, my intonation is running up and down (and I nearly forgot the important details!). But, DJ Leo quickly picked up where I left and guide me back so that I can finish the announcement with all the details not being spare.

After apologizing for my mistakes many times, they told me it is good enough for a first timer and asked me to come back for an Iban session or if I am interested in broadcasting. Even though I had my time in RTM Miri, I guess I’ll pass on the offer.

What have I learn today:

  1. Never, ever reject an offer or  once in a lifetime opportunity. You might failed yourself, but let’s take that as a lesson and make room for improvement. If you succeed, that’s an added bonus.
  2. Always, look on the positive view before you weight the negative side.
  3. As a PR, always, always debrief. Think back where is the mistakes you made, what could have been different if you use other approach and find ways to fix your weaknesses.

My view as I write this post and having snack after lunch.

Andddddd, why does my title says PR, We Do It All?

Being an intern in Corp. Comm department, it is my job to accept another rotating intern (interns from other department such as accounting, library etc) to teach and expose them to PR. I’ve taught them to do media clipping, writing press release and how to promote events through different channels.

Just yesterday, a new intern came and I showed her all the places in Pustaka. I introduced her to everyone in the management team and tried my best to remember and explain what is the role of each department.

I too, did some library task such as as record and store data for new books, track and trace books, doing registration for new library members and helped my colleague to write a formal letter to invite Curtin University Sarawak for the upcoming event.

I guess, I almost did and experienced doing task in other areas except for accounting/finance and technical department.

I hope my other fellow course mate learn something from me today. Thank you for reading!
