This week my team had 2 events to handle for two different clients and as you can probably imagine it was a really hectic week. Thankfully both the events went well and there were no major slip ups. Of course, there is no perfect event and there were mistakes made but I feel I gained a lot of knowledge and experience.

For both the events I was put at the media registration post which meant I would be handling the media and giving my team updates on how many people had turned up and how many more we were expecting. On both occasions the turn out was pretty good and most of our expected guests showed up and there were always more than enough door gifts and press kits for everyone. I never encountered any problems dealing with guests and I always tried to remember everyone’s name and be as accommodating as possible to ensure they had a pleasant evening. All in all in regards to my responsibilities I think I fulfilled them well but I do realize my tasks weren’t as big or important as my teammates. I completely understand not giving an intern a whole lot of responsibility because it may come off as insulting to our client. But I did try to be as helpful as possible in whatever small way I could.

One of the takeaways from the two events was that events are all about preparation. I am a firm believer that fear comes only from a lack of preparation and if you are prepared enough than you have nothing to be scared about. Now being prepared is twofold in the sense that you need to be prepared with all the necessities such as documents, press kits, stationary, agenda and all the other things that are required. You also need to be mentally prepared because no event goes totally according to plan and you need to be prepared for unexpected problems to arise and you have to be alert and quick in resolving these issues. Unfortunately, the latter is something you can only prepare for through experience which I obviously don’t have a lot of but thankfully there weren’t any major left turns and it never came to that point. I think with every event that I participate in I start to get a little more comfortable and it becomes a lot easier.

Events are really fun and exciting although they can be stressful but I’m enjoying every second of it as I’m edging closer to the end of my internship. At this stage I’m just focused on giving it my all and learning as much as I can.
