Many of you may know the quote, ‘Don’t be sad it’s over, be happy because it happened’ and with just three days left of my internship. I’m struggling not to be a little bit of both.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I am really grateful for the work experience at Hockey WA and I feel like I have learnt so much but it’s really difficult not to be sad it is coming to an end as I have really enjoyed some of the tasks they have gotten me to do and meeting the team I was working with.
A particular recent task I’ve enjoyed has been planning the video content for the Pride Match promotion. To begin with, I was feeling really stuck. I wanted to come up with some creative new ideas for the promotion but all I could think to do was player interviews – which is what all the promo material has always previously been! After a bit of brainstorming however, I came up with the idea to incorporate mini activities into the player interviews and relate them to pride. For example, I planned to quiz the athletes on pop culture, sporting and historical facts relating to pride in a competition against each other and film this as content for Instagram reels or Facebook.
I think the reason I enjoy tasks like this is because it gets me to think outside the box and be creative and engaging in my approach. These are skills that are important for anyone wanting to pursue a career in public relations and whenever I get to apply these skills in a practical way, I am much more interested in the tasks. I’ve noticed from my internship that a lot of the work is a mixture of repetitive tasks with hands on projects in between and I appreciate the balance this brings.
Some of the other tasks I finally completed were also my Facebook Audit and Influencer List. From these, the marketing team was able to improve their social media presence and have a set location where they can access relevant social media contacts. Below you can see a copy of the statistics I was able to create from the social media data I collected. This was a lengthy process but putting together all the information at the end was really satisfying.
