I’m three weeks in to my internship with Corporate Sports Australia and honestly it’s been a bit of an adjustment. I should start by saying that this isn’t my first office job or even my first internship. I previously interned and then later on worked for the Curtin Careers Centre – I’ve always pretty much assumed that all office environments were relatively the same.

Boy, was I wrong.

Moving from a large, highly bureaucratic environment like Curtin to a small private business has come with its own unique set of adjustments that I wasn’t expecting. The office itself is pretty small as is the team, and being in such close proximity with everyone, and hearing absolutely everything that goes on in the office is definitely entertaining. Despite having to adjust, I really like the team and there seems to be a lot of banter and discussions going on.

It’s been a pretty slow introduction and I’ve struggled to figure out what to write about for my first post – hence why I’ve been putting it off until now. I feel like everything is moving along slowly but surely, and I know that soon things will get a lot busier and I probably won’t know what hit me. Thankfully I feel like I’m finally settling in and beginning to understand what my role is in the company, which is important to me as I get anxious when I don’t know where I stand. Currently, Corporate Sports is busy with last minute planning for the Perth Garden Festival, and it seems so far away even though it’s only 2 and a half weeks away.

My tasks so far have been pretty menial but one thing this job is not is boring. No two days are the same – which I enjoy – and so far I’ve created and commented on social media posts for both the Garden Festival and Running Festival, written EDM content, web articles, and even competition emails. This afternoon I even got a taste of the gritty underside of event management – spending hours folding, laminating, and cutting letters and name tags for the Garden Festival.

Writing it all down now, it actually does seem like I’ve done a lot in my short time with Corporate Sports, but I still feel like I’m moving a bit slower than I’d like trying to find my footing. In my previous position I spent basically all my time writing and editing, and it’s been a challenge to try and alter my writing to suit the more marketing-based style necessary for my current position. I’m enjoying the challenge however, as it’s all good experience and will help me when figuring out what kind of whole I’d like to move into after graduation.

It’s still early days, but so far so good. I’m gaining valuable experience, and looking forwards to learning everything I can during my internship.
