I am in my 4th week of my internship, and i am starting to feel the struggle every morning now. (Monday – Friday)
This week i was more involve with photo taking for our new website and Instagram post, it was a whole new experience for me, as I have never done any food collaterals. I realise its seems easy, but getting a good picture out takes a lot of skills and planning, as we don’t want our pictures to turn like this

normal and doesn’t even look appetising(not original photo)
Hence, the graphic designer and I did some homework for our worthy Instagram Shot
- Look for natural light (nearby window/doors, perfect place for a good snap shot)
- Use a reflector (to get the perfectly even spread lighting)
- You need to decorations. (e.g. cloth, lemon, tomatoes, flower)
- You need to market the angle correctly, hence TAKE YOUR TIME (fish and chips, focus on the fish instead of the chips. I asked the chief what was the main point of the dessert he was serving? and he said it was the baklava instead of the Ice Cream, so i shifted my focus to the baklava)
- Tell a story (e.g. birthday, anniversary)
so after much attempt we finally came out with the perfect photo

TADAH!!!!!!!! which we were very please with the results.
I’m curious to know if any one of you have come across food photography and have no clue how to do, but however manage to produce amazing pictures during your internship? or do you have any other tips about how to take amazing photos, please share it with me.
Thank you
Shantel

Hey Shantel! Well lucky for you, food photography is my expertise! I’ve done some research recently and those points that you mentioned do enhance the appearance of the food. I would say preparation is the key. Try to figure out the layout, lighting, the props that you want to use before cooking a storm. Have a visualization of how the overall product will be. Sketching it out would make it better. Natural lighting would be the best and make use of cardboards (white/black) to add/reduce highlights or shadows 🙂 Also the final product looks pretty awesome! Continue doing what you’re doing. I hope all the best for you.
