Hi all!
Week 2 is officially done and dusted (finally)! I’m a little bit late to the game only starting my internship two weeks ago but I am excited for the experiences I have ahead of me. I have a few mixed feelings (to date) with my internship at The Federation of Western Australian Police and Community Youth Centre (PCYC) head office. I absolutely love PCYC’s mission that is solely centered around creating opportunities for young people through their youth services and development programs. PCYC currently have 20 locations spread throughout WA – metro and regional.
I will be working alongside the Marketing and Fundraising team covering all things marketing, communications and PR! As this is a not-for-profit organisation, it has been easy for me to apprehend how the role of public relations within this organisation is so pivotal. In an organisation whose mission is solely centered around creating a safe space with developmental programs for the youth – particularly the troubled youth – having issues and crisis management strategies in place at all times is crucial, so it is vastly interesting to see how these strategies could potentially be carried out in a real life setting.
It has become clear to me that few people actually know what PCYC is, so I am excited to partake in the rebranding process and start a social media from scratch! I have high hopes that throughout this internship, I will be able to create and see-through significant and positive changes around the perception of PCYC and the work they do.
Although, with all the clear work that needs to be done, I thought that I might be thrown into the deep end with piles of work and challenging tasks that would leave me bewildered with questions… however, this has not been the case as of yet. In the last two weeks I have been completing tasks that have not particularly been a huge challenge for myself – rather mundane to say the least but I suppose that is all part of the learning experience. I’m sure the challenging tasks will hit me soon enough… and then you will see me here complaining about how stressed I am…Watch this space.

Thanks for sharing the first two weeks of your internship journey Lauren!
I am one of the people that you’re finding out about that aren’t aware of the Police Community Youth Centre. I think that having the opportunity to create work for an organisation that don’t already have a well established brand is an extremely exciting one because it means that you can really let out that creative side of you as well as you’re able to embrace your own ideas and style of writing for the rebranding process. I also think that it will be a great learning experience for you and I’m sure that when you look back at the reach, consumption and followers you have gained, it will be so rewarding to believe that came from your work.
I think by pursuing a degree in Public Relations, we are both passionate about shaping public attitudes and opinions and I have all faith that once you complete your internship hours, many more people in Western Australia will know about the existence and fundraising work carried out by The Federation of Western Australian Police and Community Youth Centre.
Good luck for the next few weeks of your internship! Looking forward to hearing about the challenges that present to you.
